01Sotto Assistant

Speak, and your Mac acts.

Hold a key and ask. Sotto Assistant turns what you say into actions with 77 built-in Mac tools, looks at your screen when you let it, and answers out loud.

Sees your screen

Optionally attaches a screenshot to your request, so you can ask about whatever is in front of you.

Talks back

Replies out loud with local voices, OpenAI or ElevenLabs.

Uses your own MCP servers

Sotto is an MCP client. Add the MCP servers you already run and the assistant can call their tools next to the built-in ones.

Alarms, timers and scheduled alerts

Ask for an alarm, a timer or an alert at a set time, and Sotto schedules it.

Guardrails built in

Bash runs behind a policy, every tool has privacy defaults, and the assistant keeps a history you can review.

02Your own transcription server

Your Mac becomes a private transcription server.

Sotto exposes a local REST API, so your scripts, your other Macs and anything that can make an HTTP request can use the same on-device models. Turn on remote access and reach it over Wi-Fi or Tailscale.

Start and stop recording, transcribe and upload files, read history, manage AI functions, rules, dictionary and find-and-replace, speak text, and list voices, models and languages.

Browse and try every endpoint at /docs.

A token per device

Bearer-token auth with a separate token for each device, and switches to turn whole endpoint groups off.

Wi-Fi or Tailscale

Turn on “Allow remote connections” and Sotto listens beyond localhost. Its pairing QR code carries your LAN and Tailscale addresses, and Tailscale is preferred.

Any model you like. Or none that leave your Mac.

04Meetings, media and automation

Record the meeting. Automate the rest.

Capture system audio from calls and videos without inviting a bot, auto-transcribe anything that lands in a folder, wire Sotto into Shortcuts, and have it read text back to you.

Meetings, calls and videos

Record system audio, or run continuous mic and system recording side by side. It happens on your Mac, so nothing joins the call.

Shortcuts actions

Sotto ships these as App Intents, ready to drop into Shortcuts.

  • Start, stop or toggle recording
  • Record in a language
  • Copy latest transcript
  • Transcribe clipboard or selected file
  • Continuous mic or system recording
  • Run an AI function
  • Speak text
  • Start or stop the API server

Watch folders and imports

Drag in audio or video, or drop it into a watched folder: Sotto transcribes it, writes a title and a summary, and notifies you when it's done.

Text-to-speech

Read text aloud with local voices, OpenAI or ElevenLabs, or speak to a file through the API.

Modes

Named profiles, each with its own icon, colour, local transforms and AI function.

History with re-transcribe

Replay, search and re-transcribe every recording, and keep track of what cloud transcription cost.

Find & replace

Find-and-replace rules, regex included, for names, terms and formatting.
The dictation core

Underneath it all: fast, local dictation.

The part everything else builds on. System-wide voice typing that runs on your Mac.

Push-to-talk or toggle

Hold a hotkey to talk, or tap to start and stop.

Pastes into any app

Text lands where your cursor is. Auto-copy if you prefer.

Live waveform overlay

A small overlay shows Sotto is listening.

Long dictations, streamed

Transcribes while you talk, so long takes don't wait until the end.

90+ languages

Per-language hotkeys, or let it auto-detect.

Dictionary

Teach it your names, products and jargon.

Careful cleanup

Removes filler words without mangling what you said.

AI rules

Always-on grammar, punctuation, tone or your own rules.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

The things people actually want to know before buying.

Is Sotto just a dictation app?

Dictation is the core, but Sotto also includes Sotto Assistant (a voice assistant with 77 Mac tools that can see your screen, talk back and use your own MCP servers), a local REST API with a CLI so other machines and scripts can use your Mac's transcription, system-audio recording for meetings, watch-folder automation, Shortcuts actions and text-to-speech.

What can Sotto Assistant do?

Hold a key and ask. It has 77 built-in Mac tools covering Calendar, Reminders, Mail, Messages, Notes, Contacts, Maps, Weather, web, image and YouTube search, the browser, Finder, apps and windows, the clipboard, selected text, screenshots, Shortcuts, media and volume, alarms and timers, and policy-gated bash. It can optionally include a screenshot of your screen as context and answer out loud with local, OpenAI or ElevenLabs voices.

Does it work with my MCP servers?

Yes. Sotto is an MCP client: add the MCP servers you already run in the Assistant's tool settings and it can call their tools alongside the built-in ones.

Can my other devices or scripts use Sotto's transcription?

Yes. Sotto runs a local REST API (37 endpoints, with an OpenAPI spec and Swagger docs at /docs) protected by per-device bearer tokens. Turn on remote connections to reach it over your Wi-Fi or Tailscale, or use the bundled sotto CLI with --host to talk to another Mac.

Do I need an API key?

No. Local WhisperKit and Parakeet models handle transcription on your Mac, and Ollama, LM Studio and Apple Intelligence run AI locally without a key. You can also route AI through Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Grok CLI or Cursor Agent with no API key. Cloud providers are optional and use your own key.

Does Sotto work offline?

Yes. The default WhisperKit and Parakeet models run entirely on your Mac using Apple's Neural Engine. After a one-time model download, you can dictate and transcribe with no internet connection at all. Cloud models are strictly optional.

Is my audio private?

With local models, your audio never leaves your Mac — nothing is uploaded, ever. If you choose to connect a cloud model, you bring your own API key and only those recordings are sent to that provider. There's no Sotto server in the middle.

Which transcription models does Sotto use?

Sotto ships with OpenAI's Whisper models (Tiny through Large V3 Turbo and Distil Large V3) and NVIDIA's Parakeet v2/v3 models, all running locally. For cloud transcription you can connect OpenAI, Groq, xAI Grok, Deepgram Nova-3, AssemblyAI, Cartesia Ink or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint with your own key. You can re-transcribe any saved recording with a different model anytime.

Can it transcribe meetings?

Yes. Sotto can record system audio from meetings, calls and videos, or run continuous mic and system recording. It records on your Mac, so no bot joins the call. You can also import audio and video files or point a watch folder at a directory to auto-transcribe new files with a title and summary.

Is it really a one-time purchase?

Yes. $49 once, use it on up to 3 Macs, and all future updates are included. No subscription, no annual renewal, no upsell to a 'pro' tier.

How is Sotto different from SuperWhisper?

Both are local-first dictation apps for macOS. The big difference is pricing: Sotto is a one-time $49 purchase with lifetime updates on 3 Macs, while SuperWhisper's full feature set is sold as a subscription (with a pricier lifetime tier). Sotto also includes Parakeet models, per-language hotkeys, and AI text-processing functions.

How is Sotto different from MacWhisper?

MacWhisper is primarily a file-transcription app: you open it, drop a file in, and get text out. Sotto is dictation-first — a system-wide push-to-talk layer that types into whatever app you're using — and it also imports and transcribes audio files. If you mostly dictate into other apps, Sotto is built for exactly that.

See the full comparison →
What are the system requirements?

Sotto needs macOS 15 Sequoia or later. It's a native Swift app, and Apple Silicon Macs get the best performance since local models run on the Neural Engine.

What languages does Sotto support?

90+ languages via Whisper, with Parakeet v3 adding state-of-the-art multilingual accuracy. You can switch languages from the recording bar, assign a dedicated hotkey per language, or let the model auto-detect what you're speaking.
